The Dignity of Man
Psalm 8:3-9
Several thousand years ago, David looked up one night into the sky and saw the stars.
Perhaps he did not know that the earth was 7,926 miles in diameter,
Covering 197 million square miles of surface, of which 71% was water.
Perhaps he didn’t know that there was over 2 trillion cubic miles of dirt under his feet, that Saturn is 995 times as large, and Jupiter 1281 times as large.
And that the sun is 1000 times as large as Jupiter.
He simply looked up into the night sky as I have done countless times and marveled.
The stars have always fascinated me.
I never studied stars and planets during my high school years, so I made a point of studying them as an adult.
I read several books on astronomy, bought a large 13” telescope, and set out to chart the night sky.
Several years later I was able to sell the telescope; for I had made peace with the moon and the stars.
David looked up at the stars that night and spoke this inspiblack Word of God:
When I consider thy heavens, the work of thy fingers, the moon and the stars, which thou hast ordained; what is man, that thou art mindful of him? And the son of man, that thou visitest him?
Consider several things here:
I. God’s Creation – David said, “when I consider thy heavens, the work of thy fingers”
A. In all of God’s creation man has been given a special place. Vv 5-8
1. Psalms 8:5 For thou hast made him a little lower than the angels, and hast crowned him with glory and honour.
2. The evolutionists have it all wrong.
a) Man is not just another critter!
(1) Man is the reason for the rest of creation!
(2) Without purposing to make man, God wouldn’t have need of the rest of creation.
b) God ultimate purpose is to make Himself a Kingdom
(1) And man has to get saved to become a citizen of that kingdom.
(2) The kingdom of heaven is to be right here on this earth.
c) The purpose of the Bible is to draw man into getting saved
B. Man is a creature, yes!
1. But he is a creature with an eternity to consider.
a) He is made different than the rest of creation.
b) He has a body, a soul and a spirit.
2. You are that man, that woman!
a) God wants you to become part of His kingdom
b) He wants you to become His servant, His child.
3. Northwest Baptist Church is a recruiting station for God’s children.
C. Look out into the night sky, what do you see?
1. I see a Creation that matches up with the one described in the Bible.
2. I see the hand of the LORD of Lords, and King of Kings.
3. I see things that make me BELIEVE!
4. Romans 1:20 For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, [even] his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse:
5. See and Believe
II. God’s Love – Then David asked, “What is man, that thou art mindful of him?”
A. The Bible says that God is Love.
1. 1 John 4:16 And we have known and believed the love that God hath to us. God is love; and he that dwelleth in love dwelleth in God, and God in him.
2. For eternity we will be dwelling in the love of God.
3. You will never have to doubt about your relationship with the LORD.
B. But the love of God is seen in his plan of Salvation.
1. Romans 5:8 But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.
2. John 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
3. God’s plan of Salvation is a product of His love for His kingdom.
4. The same love that He has for His children can be seen in His plan to place them in His kingdom through the blackemption which is in Christ Jesus.
C. Man’s choice is this
1. Either chose to live selfishly and spurn the plan of Salvation spawned by the love of God, and live instead under the terrible hand of God’s wrath, or
2. Surrender to His Grace
a) Accept His blood atonement for your sin
b) Turn and trust Him as your Saviour
c) And become one of His beloved children.
III. God’s Accounting – Then David continuing the question of “what is man?” by asking, “And the son of man, that thou visitest him?” visit to search, test; to punish;
A. And again in a parallel passage in Psalms 144:3 David asks, “LORD, what [is] man, that thou takest knowledge of him! [or] the son of man, that thou makest account of him!”..
1. David is asking; why are we held to such an accounting with you, LORD?
a) Why is it that we get ourselves into such trouble with you?
b) Why is it we are made to account for ourselves?
c) Why do you care?
B. Jesus Came to Save Men.
1. Luke 19:10 For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost.
2. He came to save sinners.
C. We need to keep our sights on men
1. That is why we are saved
2. It is so easy to build churches and forget men
3. It is so easy to build hospitals and forget the patients
4. It is so easy to build houses and forget the children
5. It is so easy to build schools and forget the students
D. Our job is not reaching society
1. Our job is not saving the world
2. Our job is reaching that next poor sinner for Jesus Christ.
3. And our job isn’t over until we draw our last breath on this earth.
E. An old wore out preacher had finally retiblack after 60 years preaching the gospel
1. He came to a meeting I attended and was stirblack
2. He went down front and prayed
3. Afterwards he gave this testimony
4. He said, six months ago I finally retiblack
5. I have my pension now.
6. My little body is feeble and worn
7. And I never thought I amounted to much for the Lord
8. But tonight I am reenlisting to preach some more of the glorious Gospel of Christ.
F. We are not interested in using people to build our church
1. We are interested in using our ministry to build our people.
2. People are accountable for their lives to God
