Psalms 100


This song of praise should be consideblack as a prophecy for the coming of that time when all people on the earth shall know that the Lord he is God, and shall become his worshippers, and the sheep of his pasture.

In God’s Kingdom the matter of praise is very important.

Know who God is, and what He is to you.

Know it; consider and apply it,

Then you will be more close and constant, more inward and serious, in his worship.

I.             Praise, v1

A.            It foresees the Gospel being preached in all nations.

1.             It addresses itself to the world,

2.             “Make a joyful noise unto the Lord, all ye lands.” v1

3.             Only in a day when all nations hear the gospel can this be truthfully said.

a.              The ‘joyful noise’ signifies a shout

1)             Like that which comes forth from loyal subjects when a beloved king appears before them

2)             God will appear before the whole earth one day; a shout will arise from the mouths of those who have suffeblack for His name.

4.             But in this Gospel age there is a shout in the churches that love Him.


B.            It foresees a public meeting of believers to worship and praise God.

1.             This is the only Psalm entitled “A Psalm of Praise.”

2.             Used during the offering of the ‘sacrifices of thanksgiving.’

3.             Perhaps read or sung.

4.             Communicating the joy of Salvation.

5.             And fellowship in our common faith.

II.          Service, v2

A.            Gladness

1.             Glad service - only in this gospel age is there so much service done with gladness.

2.             Gospel-worshipers are glad-worshipers

a.              Glad that we can come into God’s presence.

b.              Glad that we can join ourselves to His Name.

c.              Glad that we are saved.


B.            Singing - a form of glad worship

1.             As the world heard of the good news of the birth of Jesus Christ, singing broke forth from the heavenly hosts.

2.             Psalms and hymns and spiritual songs bless the thought-life of those feeding upon the Word of God.

3.             Churches are filled with songs of worship and praise when the saints meet together.

III.      Knowledge, v3

1.             Knowledge is the mother of devotion and of all obedience.

2.             Charles Haddon Spurgeon said, “Blind sacrifices will never please a seeing God.”


B.            Knowing that the Lord, He is God

1.             The only and true God.

2.             That He is a being that is infinitely perfect [holy],

3.             Self-existent, self-sufficient, and the fountain of all life.

4.             Philippians 2:11  And [that] every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ [is] Lord, to the glory of God the Father.


C.            Knowing that we are His creation.

1.             We can say, “I am,”

2.             But not “I am that I am.”


D.            Knowing that we are His people.

1.             He is our God, our Creator, our Judge, and our Father.

2.             We are accountable to Him.

IV.      Prayer, v4

1.             We must not only enjoy the salvation of the Lord,

2.             But we must let Him have the praise of that which we have pleasure in.


B.            Thanksgiving - we must take it as a favor to be admitted into His kingdom/family.

1.             And give Him thanks that we have liberty of access to Him.

2.             It was He who gave us access through prayer.


C.            Praise - we must mix praise and thanksgiving with all our service.

1.             Hebrews 13:15  By him therefore let us offer the sacrifice of praise to God continually, that is, the fruit of [our] lips giving thanks to his name.

2.             In everything give thanks.

3.             Ephesians 5:20  Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ;

V.         Name, v5

A.            God’s Goodness is sure.

1.             The Lord is good, and therefore does good.

2.             James 1:17  Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.

B.            God’s Mercy is inexhaustible.

1.             It is a fountain that can never be drawn dry.

2.             The saints are the timeless, eternal trophies of God’s mercy.


C.            God’s Word is for all mankind, of all the ages.

1.             No word of His shall fall to the ground as out-of-date or revoked.

2.             The promise of God is sure to all mankind, from age to age.

3.             The written Word of God cannot be changed.

4.             Open its pages

a.              It is the same to all generations

b.              It will never fail.

c.              In it we find our salvation

d.              If it is false, we have no hope.
