The Nature Of Jesus by Carey Scott

The Nature Of Jesus

Carey Scott
at and

This outline was given to me. It was written by Dudley Ross Spears.

We have had a few discussions about "The Nature of Jesus" and how He is both man and God. We even have had several questions arise because of these sermons and discussions.

The writings of John provide us with more information about what God is, than possibly any other biblical data. Other words of inspiration tell us what God does, what attributes he possesses and powers he exhibits, but it is John who zeros in primarily on what God *is*.

Three statements in his inspired writings tell us.

"God is spirit" (John 4:24).
"God is spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth"

"God is love" (1 John 4:8).
"The one who does not love does not know God, for God is love".

"God is light (1 John 1:5)
"And this is the message we have heard from Him and announce to you, that God is light, and in Him there is no darkness at all."

Please consider the following thoughts extracted from these verses

Jesus is referred to as"that which was from the beginning."
1 John 1:1-3
"What was from the beginning, what we have heard, what
we have seen with our eyes, what we beheld and our hands handled, concerning the Word of Life. {2} and the life was manifested, and we have seen and bear witness and proclaim
to you the eternal life, which was with the Father and was manifested to us. {3} what we have seen and heard we proclaim to you also, that you also may have fellowship with us; and
indeed our fellowship is with the Father, and with His Son Jesus Christ.

2. He came to earth from his pre-existent condition and men were privileged to hear him, see him, behold him and touch him.

3. He is the "life" that was manifested to us (verse 2).
John 1:4-5 "In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. {5} And The light shines in the darnkess, and the darkness did not comprehend it.
John 14:6 "Jesus said to him, 'I am the way, and the truth, and the life; No one comes to the Father, but through Me.'" 4. The "life" is referred to as "that eternal life
which was manifested unto us". Please note that
verse three refers to Jesus Christ in the flesh.
John 5:39 "And from that city many of the Samaritans believed in Him because of the word of the woman who testified,
'He told me all the things that I have done'".
John 6:68-69
"Simon Peter answered Him, 'Lord, to whom shall we go? You have words of eternal life'. {69} And we have believed and have come to know that You are the Holy One of God.'"

John 10:27-28 "My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they
follow Me; {28} and I give eternal life to them, and they shall never perish; and no one shall snatch them out of My hand.

1 John 5:11-12 "And the witness is this, that God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son. {12} He who has the Son has the life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have the life."

1 John 5:20 "And we know that the Son of God has come, and has given us understanding, in order that we might know Him who is true, and we are in Him who is true, in His Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God and eternal life."

5. Both Father and Son are "light."

Eph 1:3 "Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ,"

Father and Son share "one" nature".
John 10:30 "I and the Father are one"
John 8:42 "Jesus said to them. 'If God were your Father, you would love Me; for I proceeded forth and have come from God, for I have not even come on My own initiative, but He sent me."

John 8:19 "And so they were saying to Him, 'Where is Your Father?' Jesus answered, 'You know neither Me, nor My Father; if you knew Me, you would know My Father also."
John 10:37-38
"If I do not do the works of My Father, do not believe Me; {38} but if I do them, though you do not believe Me, believe the words, that you may know and understand that the Father is in Me, and I in the Father."

c. John introduced Jesus as "the true light"
John 1:9 "There was the true light which, coming into the world, enlightens every man.
John 8:12 "Again therefore Jesus spoke to them, saying, 'I am the light of the world; he who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.'"
John 9:5 "While I am in the world, I am the light of the world."

d. Isaiah prophesied about the everlasting light "
Isa. 60:19 "No longer will you have the sun for light by day, Nor for brightness will the moon give you light; But you will have the Lord for an everlasting light,
And your God for your glory."

e. He added,
"I am come a light into the world, that whosoever believeth on me should not abide in darkness" (John 12:46).

f. The prophets saw Jesus as "light."
Isa 9:2 "The people which sat in darkness saw great light; and to them which sat in the region and shadow of death light is sprung up" quoted in Matt. 4:16.

g. Simeon's prophecy.
Luke 2:25-35
"And behold, there was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon; and this man was righteous and devout, looking for the consolation of Israel; and the Holy Spirit was upon him. {26} And it had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not see death before he had seen the Lord's Christ. {27} And he came in the Spirit into the temple; and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to carry out for Him the custom of the Law, {28} then he took Him into his arms, and blessed God, and said, {29} 'Now Lord, Thou dost let Thy bondservant depart, In peace, according to Thy word; {30} For my eyes have seen Thy salvation, {31} Which Thou has prepared in the presence of all peoples, {32} "A light of revelation to the Gentiles, And the glory of Thy people Israel." {33} And His father and mother were amazed at the things which were being said about Him. {34} And Simeon blessed them, and said to Mary His mother, "Behold, this Child is appointed for the fall and rise of many in Israel, and for a sign to be opposed {35} and a sword will pierce even your own soul, to the end that thoughts from many hearts may be revealed.""

Compare the last verse with;

Heb 4:12 "For the word of God is living and active and sharper than any
Two-edged sword, and piercing as far as the division of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart."

h. At his transfiguration, three disciples saw the glory of God in Jesus.
Matt 17:2 "And He was transfigured before them; and His face shone like the sun, and His garments became as white as light."

i. Most fittingly, Paul's personal witness of the resurrection of Jesus, describes Jesus as "a light from heaven, above the brightness of the sun"
Acts 9:3-5
"And it came about that as he journeyed, he was approaching
Damascus, and suddenly a light from heaven flashed around him; {4} and he fell to the ground, and heard a voice saying to him, 'Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting Me?' {5} And he said, 'Who art Thou, Lord?', And He said, 'I am Jesus whom you are persecuting.'"

Acts 26:15-18 "And I said, 'Who art Thou, Lord?', and the Lord said, 'I am Jesus whom you are persecuting. {16} But arise, and stand on your feet; for this purpose I have appeared to you,
to appoint you a minister and a witness not only to the things which you have seen, but also to the things in which I will appear to you; {17} delivering you from the Jewish people and from the Gentiles, to whom I am sending you,
{18} to open their eyes so that they may turn from darkness to light and from the dominion of Satan to God, in order that they may receive forgiveness of sins and an inheritance among those who have been sanctified by faith in Me."

j. On the basis of his fulfillment of every salient aspect of the prophetic truth about him, climaxing in his victory over Satan,

2 Tim 1:10 "but now has been revealed by the appearing of our Savior Christ Jesus, who abolished death, and brought life and immortality to light through the gospel,"

k. Though it is figurative language, the following fits the coming of Jesus into this world:
Rev 18:1 "After these things I saw another angel coming down from heaven having great authority, and the earth was illumined with His Glory."

l. Jesus is also the light of the great city of God.
Rev 21:23
"And the city had no need of the sun, neither of the moon, to shine in it: for the glory of God did lighten it, and the Lamb is the light thereof"

Hopefully, these passages will help you to understand more about
the nature of Christ. As we can understand about Him and where He
came from, we can also be touched by the fact that He is our great
example to live by. We should gain a greater appreciation for the
things that He endured, as He prepared the way of salvation. By this
we should give God the Glory, as we live our lives.
