    Introduction

Let me tell you something I’ve learned in over 40 years of ministry and raising 10 children (yes, you read that right—TEN!): life doesn’t always feel like a Sunday morning worship service. Sometimes it feels more like Monday morning traffic—frustrating, slow-moving, and you’re not sure you’ll ever get where you’re going.

But here’s the beautiful mystery I’ve discovered: worship isn’t just for the mountaintop moments. In fact, some of the most powerful worship happens in the valley. When you’re going through the hardest season of your life and you choose to lift your voice in praise anyway—that’s when breakthrough begins.

Think about it like this: worship during good times is like coasting downhill on a bicycle. It’s easy, natural, enjoyable. But worship during trials? That’s like pedaling uphill with a strong headwind. It takes effort, determination, and faith. But let me tell you—when you reach the top of that hill, the view is absolutely worth it.

2 Chronicles 20:22 shows us something remarkable: “As they began to sing and praise, the Lord set ambushes against the enemies.” Notice it says “as they began”—not after they felt better, not when circumstances changed, but right in the middle of the battle.

Why Worship Works During Difficult Times

    The Spiritual Warfare of Worship

I’ll never forget counseling a couple who faced one of their darkest moments. Their teenage son had just told them he was walking away from his faith. As parents, they felt like failures. The father was a ministry leader—he thought he should have all the answers. But that night, they had nothing but tears and questions.

The mother did something that seemed counterintuitive. She put on a worship song and started singing through her tears. Her husband thought she’d lost it. But you know what happened? The atmosphere in their home shifted. The crushing weight of fear started to lift. They didn’t have answers yet, but they had hope again.

Here’s the thing about worship during trials—it’s spiritual warfare disguised as a love song to God.

The enemy wants you silent. He wants you focused on your problems, drowning in worry, paralyzed by fear. But when you open your mouth and worship anyway, you’re declaring: “Devil, you don’t get the final say. My God is bigger than this situation.”

Psalm 22:3 tells us God inhabits the praises of His people. When you worship, you’re literally inviting God’s presence into your circumstances. And let me tell you, where God shows up, everything changes.

    Worship Shifts Your Perspective

Imagine you’re standing with your nose pressed against a brick wall. All you can see is brick. That’s what trials feel like—they fill your entire field of vision until you can’t see anything else.

Worship is like taking several steps back. Suddenly you realize that brick wall is just one wall of a beautiful building. There’s a whole world beyond it. You haven’t changed the wall, but you’ve changed your perspective.

When Paul and Silas were beaten and thrown in prison (Acts 16:25), they could have focused on their pain, their injustice, their locked chains. Instead, they sang hymns at midnight. And God sent an earthquake that not only freed them but saved the jailer’s entire family!

They didn’t worship because they felt like it. They worshiped because they knew Who was in control, regardless of their circumstances.

15 Powerful Worship Songs for Difficult Times

Over the years, certain songs have become my “go-to” weapons when life gets hard. I’ve sung these in hospital waiting rooms, at gravesides, during financial crises, and in seasons of deep discouragement. Every single one has helped me find breakthrough.

    Songs of God’s Faithfulness

    1. “Goodness of God” – Bethel Music

“All my life You have been faithful, all my life You have been so, so good”

This song is like a spiritual memory lane. When you’re in the middle of a storm, it forces you to remember: God has been faithful before, and He’ll be faithful again. I’ve seen grown men weep singing this one because it reminds them of battles already won.

    2. “Great Is Thy Faithfulness” – Traditional Hymn

Don’t underestimate the old hymns, folks. There’s a reason they’ve survived generations. This one has gotten me through more hard mornings than I can count. “Morning by morning new mercies I see”—that’s not just poetry, that’s a promise.

    3. “Way Maker” – Sinach

“Even when I don’t see it, You’re working”

This is the song for when you can’t see what God is doing. It’s faith in the dark. I remember singing this during a financial crisis when we had no idea how we’d pay our bills. Within a week, provision came from the most unexpected place. God was making a way we couldn’t see.

    Songs of God’s Presence

    4. “You Say” – Lauren Daigle

When the world says you’re a failure, when circumstances say you’re defeated, when your own mind says you’re not enough—this song reminds you what God says about you. It’s like armor for your identity.

    5. “Oceans (Where Feet May Fail)” – Hillsong United

I sang this song on repeat when my daughter went through a serious health crisis. “Spirit lead me where my trust is without borders”—that’s not a casual prayer. That’s surrender at the deepest level. And surrender is where peace lives.

    6. “In the Secret” (I Want to Know You) – Andy Park

This one is for the private moments when you just need to be alone with God. It’s intimate, honest, vulnerable. Some of my deepest worship experiences have been just me, this song, and Jesus.

    Songs of Hope and Breakthrough

    7. “Firm Foundation (He Won’t)” – Cody Carnes

“He won’t fail, He won’t fail, He won’t fail me”

This is declaration worship. When doubt creeps in, you declare what you know is true. I’ve driven down the highway shouting these words when I felt like my world was crumbling. It works.

    8. “Do It Again” – Elevation Worship

Your testimony is a weapon. This song is about remembering God’s past faithfulness and believing He’ll do it again. Whatever He’s done before, He can do again. Red Sea parted once? He can part your Red Sea too.

    9. “Resurrecting” – Elevation Worship

“The same power that rose Jesus from the grave”

Listen, if God can raise the dead, He can handle whatever you’re facing. This song puts your problems in perspective. Dead things coming back to life? That’s what God specializes in.

    Songs for Spiritual Warfare

    10. “No Longer Slaves” – Bethel Music

“I’m no longer a slave to fear, I am a child of God”

Fear is a liar and a bully. This song is like taking fear by the collar and throwing it out of your house. I’ve used it to break anxiety attacks, calm panic, and restore peace. It’s powerful.

    11. “What He’s Done” – Passion

The devil wants you focused on your problems. This song shifts your focus to what Jesus has already accomplished. The battle is already won at the cross—we’re just enforcing the victory.

    12. “Battles Belong” – Phil Wickham

Here’s a secret many Christians forget: the battle isn’t yours to fight. It belongs to the Lord. This song is permission to stop striving and start trusting. When my son faced false accusations at work, we played this on repeat. God fought that battle and won.

    Songs of Surrender and Trust

    13. “It Is Well” – Bethel Music / Kristene DiMarco

Based on the classic hymn but with a fresh sound, this song represents peace in the storm. Horatio Spafford wrote the original after losing everything. If he could say “it is well” in his circumstances, surely we can in ours.

    14. “Even If” – MercyMe

“I know You’re able and I know You can, save through the fire with Your mighty hand, but even if You don’t, my hope is You alone”

This is mature faith. It’s Job saying “though He slay me, yet will I trust Him.” It’s three Hebrew boys saying “our God can save us from the fire, but even if He doesn’t, we won’t bow.” This kind of worship moves heaven.

    15. “Surrounded (Fight My Battles)” – UPPERROOM

“This is how I fight my battles”

The simplicity of this song is deceptive. Singing “this is how I fight my battles” while you’re actually in a battle is a declaration that shakes the enemy’s kingdom. It’s saying “I’m not fighting with my strength—I’m fighting with worship.”

How to Use Worship Songs During Trials

    Create a Breakthrough Playlist

Here’s what I tell people: make a playlist before you need it. You know how you keep a fire extinguisher in your kitchen even though your house isn’t on fire? Same principle. Create a “difficult times” playlist now, so when trouble comes (and Jesus said it would—John 16:33), you’re ready.

    My personal playlist strategy:

    • 3-4 songs that remind me of God’s faithfulness
    • 3-4 songs that declare His presence
    • 3-4 songs that release breakthrough
    • 2-3 songs that help me surrender

That’s about 30-45 minutes of worship. Enough to shift your atmosphere without being overwhelming.

Worship Even When You Don’t Feel Like It

    Worship Songs for Difficult Times

Let me be honest with you—and I can do this because I’ve been preaching since I was 15, so I’ve earned the right to tell you hard truths: Most of the time during trials, you won’t feel like worshiping.

I didn’t feel like worshiping when we got the cancer diagnosis. I didn’t feel like worshiping when the church went through a painful split. I didn’t feel like worshiping when my bank account was negative and bills were due.

But here’s what I’ve learned: worship isn’t a feeling, it’s a choice. It’s a sacrifice. Hebrews 13:15 calls it “the sacrifice of praise.” Know why it’s a sacrifice? Because it costs you something. It costs your pride, your right to complain, your desire to focus on the problem.

Think of it like medicine. When you’re sick, you don’t take medicine because it tastes good. You take it because you need it. Worship during trials is medicine for your soul.

    Sing Through the Tears

Some of my most powerful worship moments have happened with tears streaming down my face. Don’t wait until you can sing without crying. God collects your tears in a bottle (Psalm 56:8)—He’s not bothered by them.

I remember leading worship one Sunday morning just days after we’d lost a pregnancy. My wife was heartbroken, I was heartbroken, and I had to get up and lead the congregation in praise. I wept through the entire first song. But you know what? God showed up in that vulnerability. People were touched, hearts were healed, and I learned that authentic worship—tears and all—is the most powerful kind.

    Declare Scripture Through Song

Many worship songs are Scripture set to melody. When you sing them, you’re not just singing—you’re declaring God’s Word over your situation. You’re prophesying your future. You’re preaching to your own soul.

Psalm 42:5 says: “Why, my soul, are you downcast? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Savior and my God.”

David was literally preaching to himself. Sometimes you need to be your own pastor, your own worship leader, your own encourager. And songs help you do that.

    Real-Life Breakthrough Stories

    The Hospital Room Miracle

A couple in my church had their newborn in the NICU fighting for life. The doctors had given them little hope. The mother asked me what she should do.

I said, “Worship. Right there in that hospital room, worship.”

She thought I was crazy. But she did it. She played worship songs by her baby’s incubator 24/7. Nurses commented on the “different atmosphere” in that room. And against all odds, that baby came home healthy.

Now, I’m not saying worship is magic, or that it manipulates God into giving us what we want. But I am saying worship shifts the atmosphere, builds faith, and positions us to receive miracles.

    The Financial Turnaround

I mentioned earlier our financial crisis. We were at rock bottom. I remember sitting at my kitchen table looking at bills I couldn’t pay, and my teenage daughter walked in and said, “Dad, want to worship?”

Out of the mouths of babes, right? We stood in that kitchen and sang “Way Maker” and “Goodness of God” for probably 30 minutes.

The next morning—and I’m not exaggerating—I received three unexpected checks in the mail. Not enough to solve everything, but enough to breathe. Within a month, a door opened for additional income we hadn’t seen coming. God made a way where there was no way.

    The Marriage Restoration

A couple came to me on the brink of divorce. Twenty years of marriage, ready to throw it away. I gave them homework: every night before bed, hold hands and sing one worship song together.

They thought I was out of my mind. But they were desperate, so they tried it.

The first week, they couldn’t even look at each other while singing. Week two, they started making eye contact. Week three, they started praying together after the song. Three months later, they renewed their vows.

Worship didn’t fix all their problems, but it created an environment where God could work. It softened hearts, opened communication, and reminded them of the God who brought them together in the first place.

    Frequently Asked Questions

What if worship doesn’t seem to be working?

Brother, I feel you on this one. I’ve had seasons where I worshiped faithfully and it felt like nothing was happening. Here’s what I’ve learned: worship always works—but not always on our timeline or in ways we immediately recognize.

Sometimes the breakthrough is internal before it’s external. Sometimes God is changing YOU in the waiting. Keep worshiping. Trust the process. Galatians 6:9 promises: “Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.”

Is it wrong to cry or feel sad while worshiping?

Absolutely not! The Psalms are full of honest emotion—anger, sadness, confusion, fear. God can handle your tears. In fact, I think He prefers authentic tears to fake smiles. Worship isn’t about pretending everything is fine. It’s about bringing everything to God—the good, the bad, and the ugly.

What if I don’t know these songs?

No problem! YouTube and Spotify are your friends. Search for “worship songs for difficult times” and you’ll find hundreds of playlists. Start with the songs I’ve listed here. Listen to them, learn them, let them sink into your soul.

And remember: you don’t need to sound good. You just need to be sincere. God isn’t looking for American Idol winners. He’s looking for authentic worshipers.

Can I worship when I’m angry at God?

Yes! And I’ll go further—sometimes the most honest worship starts with anger. Look at the Psalms. David got real with God all the time. “How long, O Lord?” “Why have You forsaken me?” That’s worship too—honest communication with God.

God is big enough to handle your anger. Just don’t let it turn into bitterness. Bring it to Him, talk it out, and let worship transform that anger into trust.

Should I worship privately or with others during trials?

Both. Private worship is intimate and personal. Corporate worship is powerful and encouraging. You need both.

During trials, I’d say lean heavier on private worship because you need that personal connection with God. But don’t isolate completely. Let your church family worship with you and for you when you’re too weak to worship alone.

Conclusion: Your Breakthrough is in Your Praise

Listen, I’ve been doing this Christian thing for over four decades now. I’ve seen some amazing things and some heartbreaking things. I’ve walked through valleys that felt like they’d never end. I’ve faced trials that seemed impossible.

But here’s what I know beyond any shadow of doubt: worship works.

Not as a formula. Not as manipulation. But as genuine, heartfelt expression of trust in a God who is faithful even when circumstances are not.

Your breakthrough might not look like you expect. It might not come on your timeline. But it will come. And often, the worship itself IS the breakthrough—not because circumstances change, but because YOU change in the presence of God.

So put on those worship songs. Sing through the tears. Declare God’s faithfulness even when you can’t see it. Dance in your living room if you need to (my wife and I have done this more times than I can count). Lift your hands even when they feel heavy.

Because worship isn’t about your circumstances. It’s about your God. And your God is bigger, stronger, more faithful, and more powerful than anything you’re facing.

Start today: Pick three songs from this list. Create a playlist. Set aside 15 minutes tomorrow morning and just worship. Don’t worry about how you sound. Don’t worry if you cry. Don’t worry if you don’t “feel” anything at first.

    Just worship.

    And watch what God does.
